Fringe Theatre 2007
The real success of this show is ValLimar Jansen’s rich and full sounding singing voice to create the drama of Ethel Waters’ performances in songs such as ‘Supper Time’ by Irving Berlin and ‘Stormy Weather’, one of the outstanding standards of the 20th century.

The Scotsman | Edinburgh Festival
Jansen touches on the racial tension of the era, but doesn't labour the political point. Instead, she throws herself into the songs, making effortless work of standards such as St Louis Blues and Stormy Weather and enjoying herself immensely on lesser-known period gems.

We had never heard of Ethel Waters before this show yet this fantastic performance left us wanting to know much more. A series of powerful blues numbers were punctuated by tales from Ethel's fascinating life. Vallimar Jansen and her husband Frank delivered a stunning show which deserved a better venue and full house. If they come back to Edinburgh again we shall be the first to book tickets!

Please, please. please if you are in Edinburgh for the festival, get tickets for this 1 woman show on the life of one of the first great blues and jazz singers. Her voice filled the tiny room, and even though the audience was small she really put her heart and soul( so much soul ) into her performance. The best voice, if not the best performance in Edinburgh this year!!!

This show is everything the fringe should be, intimate, commited, displaying talent beyond rational expectation, a performer who can act and has a vocal range, power and style to die for. This is a must see show. The music is provided by a very good accompianist, the star quality is provided by Vallimar Janson, who puts her great big heart, and sparkling soul into every phrase, spoken or sung. Although the songs of Ethel Waters are still known and loved here(e.g. a good man is hard to find)her name is not now well known now in the UK. Her life from child of rape in the ghetto to Broadway star, and back again was told with both sensitivity and passion. A MUST see show.

Every year I find that one little show that makes the Fringe Festival worthwhile -- this year, it is Vallimar Jansen. An engaging and energetic actress as well as a Knock-you-over-in-the-last-row voice makes this show the ONE. With the accompaniement of a wonderful Pianist, Ms Jansen sings Waters' songs with a combination of faithful reversnce while infusing them with her own unique energy and style. Don't miss it!

An fantastic voice, a fantastic one-woman performance, capturing the life, soul and essence of the great Ethel Waters - one of the first great American superstars. And the original singer of Stormy Weather. Never heard of her? Nor had I before seeing this show - now I won't forget her. An emotional journey, with great blues numbers - and did I say a phenomenal voice? Go see it. Rave about it. Fill the room. ValLimar deserves standing ovations every day for her portrayal of Ethel Waters - and she's more than ably assisted by one fine musician tickling those ivories. Shimmy and shake, gal - from one of those you got on his feet.
